Have you ever wondered if you are treating your body right? Are you giving it what it deserves both on the inside and outside?  Nutrition and skin care are essential components in triathlon. With all the training that we do it is vital to ensure we are fueling right and protecting ourselves from harmful skin damage.  Please join us in our next two part educational series on Nutrition and Skin Cancer so that you can discover what you can do to better yourself.

    Part 1: Nutrition

Emily Haller is a register dietician with the Division of Gastroenterology at Michigan Medicine where she provides individualized nutrition counseling and medical nutritional therapy to her patients. In addition, she also operates her own private practice where she provides individualized nutrition counseling and services. Emily is one of our proud members in AATC she is passionate about active living, nutritious eating, and optimal well-being.  She is currently pursing her Masters of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics through Central Michigan University. Please join us as Emily discusses the importance of nutrition in the off-season and during training. Nutrition is not only important on race day, but rather in the months and weeks preceding and following our sacred events.  She will also cover topics such as carb to protein ratio, timing of nutrition, and importance of water and electrolyte intake.

Part 2: Skin cancer and the triathlete

Dr. Jenny Cotton, MD PhD is a Dermatopathologist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (SJMH). You may be asking yourself what is a Dermatopathologist? Or what is Dermatopathology? It is a subspecialty that focuses on the study and diagnosis of diseases of the skin at a molecular level. Dr. Cotton completed her graduate and medical school at the University of Kentucky and pursued her pathology residency and dermatopathology fellowship at Indiana University. She pioneered and developed the dermatopathology section at SJMH, which is now staffed by four dermatopathologists. Dr. Cotton has numerous publications and is co-author of a recently published dermatopathology textbook.  She is the recipient of a dermatology teaching award, and currently serves on the American Board of Pathology/Dermatology Test Development and Advisory Committee.  She is also a member of AATC and is very passionate about physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. She is certainly finds a way to do it all as an accomplished physician, mother of two, and gifted athlete. Dr. Cotton will be discussing the topic of skin cancer including risk factors, prevention, recognition, and appropriate evaluation/follow-up.

    Thursday Evening Bricks

    Thursdays June Through August

Brick workouts are a key component to every triathletes training schedule, and to no surprise the Thursday evening bricks are the staple workout of the club. We’ll meet every week, unless it’s raining, in which case, you can ride at your own risk. Here’s the info:

When:  Thursday evenings at 6:10pm (See Below)
Location: Forsythe School (See Maps Below)
Distance: Bike route: 20 mile road, 12.7 mile dirt road option, & there are 3 run routes available.

The Thursday Evening Brick workouts are structured to cater to varying abilities within the triathlon club. A phased start is used for the Brick workouts. This phased start is designed to allow the newer riders to have a head start, and ride at their own pace. The most experienced riders will be in Group 5. This also allows the group to finish the bike ride around the same time, so that folks can begin the run together. Here's how it works:

    • Group 1: Bike start at 6:10pm (<14 mph NO DROP)
    • Group 2: Bike start at 6:15PM (16 mph and under average pace)
    • Group 3: Bike start at 6:20PM (19 mph and under average pace)
    • Group 4: Bike start at 6:25PM (19 - 21 mph average pace)
    • Group 5: Bike start at 6:30PM (21 + mph average pace)

Workout nutrition provided by Infinit Nutrtion.

Muffins are available for a quick recovery snack provided by Afternoon Delight.

Epic races has added a new wave to the Island Lake Triathlon Wolverine Series which is a women's only mini-sprint for first timers.  AA Tri Club women are being asked to please support these women by volunteering to either help in the water or in the transition area. We are asking our female triathletes to consider being one of 10 volunteers to encourage and support these ladies and share in their exhilaration as they finish their first race. We won't be there long as we're only helping the mini sprinters and then Trudy will take you all out for breakfast!

We are hosting a casual training day.  This event is a nice way to practice all three disciplines.  Everyone coming can have different goals, it's your workout!  The idea is to provide a group workout to train swimming, biking, running and transitions.

    Details:

Spring Mill Pond - Turn right once in the park and follow the signs

Set up - (7:30 AM)  We will have a transition rack available.  Set up as though it's race day. Michael Parker and Ralf Mielke will be there to provide tips and answer your questions.

Swim - ( 8 to 9)  Swim 20 mins or the entire hour.  Practice your T1 as many times as you like.  No Lifeguard.  Please bring your safe swimmer if you have one.  http://saferswimmer.com/

Bike - (9 to 10) We cycle on the main 6 mile road within the park. Go back and forth until you are done.  Then practice your T2.  Note: Cars will be using the road. Please use caution.

Run  - (10-11) We will use part of the blue trail to run an out and back route.  Michael and Ralf will provide direction.

Chill at 11 (Club will supply Infinit and snacks)

***This training day is a free event thanks to our Sponsor, Parker Performance and our friends at Island Lake Park and Recreation Area.

Island Lake is seeking donations towards a road debris blower to keep their 6 mile road clear for cyclists.  We will gladly collect funds Saturday to donate or you can click here: http://islandlakefriends.org/
